GU Recovery Brew Drink
GU Electrolyte Brew Drink
GU Electrolyte Brew is water's new best friend. The fact is, when you work out you sweat more than just water. So when you drink you gotta have a special Brew with the right amounts of sodium, potassium and carbohydrates to bring your system back into balance. Used consistently, GU Brew will help you perform better and go longer.
What's in it?
- Carbohydrate Blend - The mix of maltodextrin and fructose found in GU Electrolyte Brew serves a dual role: it supplies working muscles with easily available fuel, and it speeds up the rehydration process by stimulating the absorption of both electrolytes and fluid in the stomach. Research shows that the featured 2:1 ratio of complex to simple carbohydrates will improve endurance performance by increasing the rates of exogenous carbohydrate absorption.
- Sodium and Potassium - Electrolytes facilitate the neuromuscular system’s ability to work effectively so that your muscles keep doing what your brain tells them to do. Simply put, electrolytes help to avoid cramping. GU Electrolyte Brew packs 325mg of sodium and 50mg of potassium (Blueberry Pomegranate contains 490mg of sodium and 40mg of potassium) into one 21 oz. serving.
- Natural flavor and color - Studies show that taste, aroma, and color will most likely determine whether or not you keep drinking. Too much flavor or sweetness—often found in artificially flavored drinks—will cause you to stop hydrating after a while.
How's it different?
Unlike a lot of the sport drinks available GU Electrolyte Brew has a light, mildly sweet flavor that doesn't overwhelm the athlete during activity. Adding performance to taste, the optimized 2:1 complex to simple carbohydrate ratio allows athletes to keep going for hour after hour of activity.
How do I use it?
For optimal results, always drink 20-30 oz. of GU Electrolyte Brew per hour during training or racing.Proper usage will help to replenish fluid and carbohydrate replenishment during activity.
To enjoy GU Electrolyte Brew at its most effective, prepare it just before your workout. If setting out on a multi-hour training adventure, carry GU Electrolyte Brew in powder form and mix it with water while on the go.
Start drinking GU Electrolyte Brew before starting your workout, to maximize hydration levels. We recommend 16-24 oz. of GU Electrolyte Brew consumed about an hour before exercise.
During exercise, consume 20-30 oz. of GU Electrolyte Brew per hour.
After finishing your workout continue hydrating with GU Electrolyte Brew, but supplement this with 16-32 oz. of GU Recovery Brew to help your body replenish what was lost during exercise.
Combine GU Electrolyte Brew with GU Energy Gels or Roctane Ultra Endurance Gels for the ultimate in sports hydration and fueling. Take one gel 15 minutes before training or competition and then one gel every 30-45 minutes during exercise. Drink GU Electrolyte Brew throughout and when you’re finished, complete your workout with GU Recovery Brew.
Note: Because GU Electrolyte Brew contains mostly complex carbohydrates instead of tons of sugar, it does not mix well in icy cold water. Use a little warm or room temperature water to mix it and then top it off with cold water.

Whether you’re playing soccer at the park or competing in an Ironman triathlon, you need to replace the fluid you sweat out. If you don’t then your body won’t function at its best. Even a 2-3% drop in body weight due to dehydration can lead to a drop in performance. That can translate into a 7% drop in your performance. If you think that’s no big deal, consider this: on average, the difference between the finishing time of the winner in the Tour de France and the last place rider’s time is roughly 5%. In an Ironman triathlon, 7% adds around 40 minutes to an elite amateur’s time. We thought that would get your attention.

What happened to GU2O? Can I still purchase it?
GU2O is now GU Electrolyte Brew. Brew retains all of the attributes of GU2O with a slight formulation tweak to improve performance.
Why Electrolyte Brew when original GU is already great?
They’re two different products, designed to work in tandem. Electrolyte Brew keeps you hydrated by replenishing the electrolytes your body sweats out during exercise. GU provides your body with energy to exercise and to maintain your effort during long workouts and events. The two products serve different, but equally important, functions. Most of our elite athletes carry both GU energy gels and Electrolyte Brew with them during training and racing.
Electrolyte Brew tastes lighter than some of the other sports drinks I’ve tried. Does this mean it’s less effective?
No! Many sports drinks on the market are full of sugary sweeteners and other unnecessary additives. Large amounts of sugar in your drink can lead to bloating in your belly. With Electrolyte Brew, we give you only the stuff you need to stay hydrated and none of the extra fluff.
How much should I drink each hour?
Approximately 24-32 ounces will do it. On hot days, you may even want to drink twice as much.
Will Electrolyte Brew recharge my body faster than gu energy gel?
Try it, every person will react differently. However, we don’t suggest you forgo eating GU or Roctane altogether. These gels pack valuable amino acid formulas that reduce fatigue and sharpen your mental state.
Our sports drink was designed to work in tandem with the regular intake of GU Energy Gel and Roctane. How long does Electrolyte Brew, once mixed into a beverage, remain stable? Does it need to be refrigerated? Ideally Electrolyte Brew should be mixed just prior to exercise or competition. If you know you’re going to need more than one bottle of Electrolyte Brew, we suggest you carry it along in powder form and mix it with water when needed.
Should I dilute Electrolyte Brew?
No! Electrolyte Brew was specifically formulated to deliver the energy and electrolytes you need to perform your best, hour after hour. Diluting Electrolyte Brew weakens it and could weaken you.
Is it affected by heat if warmed up for use on cold days?
It is not affected by heat, but some people like the taste of hot Electrolyte Brew while others don’t. You’re welcome to try it, or stick to eating a GU or Roctane and washing it down with warm-to-hot water.
Are there any foods or drinks to avoid while using Electrolyte Brew that would stunt or block the effectiveness of the ingredients?
All food, when taken simultaneously with GU or Electrolyte Brew, will diminish their powers. GU and Electrolyte Brew are designed to be used on an empty stomach (at least 3 hours after the last meal). All GU products deliver a high dose of calories in a rapidly digestible form that takes up minimal space in your stomach. This way you can keep fueling even when you’re pushing yourself to the max without worrying about slowing down to digest food.
Is GU Electrolyte Brew Kosher?
GU Energy Gel, Roctane, GU Electrolyte Brew, and GU Recovery Brew are all certified Kosher. Chomps are not.
Components of GU Electrolyte Brew
Electrolytes: Necessary for Optimum Hydration and Muscle Function
There are two major electrolytes in the body: sodium and potassium. You lose them because the body works with its own perfect ratio of water-to-electrolytes1, 2. So when your body turns on the sweat glands in an effort to cool you down, it also expels excess electrolytes to keep that ratio in balance. Conversely, when you drink fluid, you also need to add a proportionate amount of electrolytes back in2, 3. The addition of electrolytes enables your body to keep that new fluid around instead of dumping it in order to restore the water-to-electrolyte balance. These electrolytes also facilitate the neuromuscular system’s ability to work effectively so that your muscles keep doing what your brain tells them to do. GU Electrolyte Brew packs 325mg of sodium and 50mg of potassium into one 21 oz. serving.
GU Electrolyte Brew’s Carbohydrate Blend: Fuel in the Name of Rehydration
The mix of maltodextrin and fructose found in GU Electrolyte Brew serves a dual role: it supplies working muscles with easily available fuel, and it speeds up the rehydration process by stimulating the absorption of both electrolytes and fluid in the stomach2, 4. 66% of the blend is maltodextrin, a corn-based complex carbohydrate that the body digests faster than simple sugar. The other 33% is comprised of fructose, the principle sugar found in fruit. Research shows that this 2:1 ratio of complex to simple carbohydrates will improve endurance performance by increasing the rates of exogenous carbohydrate absorption.NEW GU Electrolyte Brew uses fructose because the stomach absorbs it in tandem alongside maltodextrin and provides your muscles with as much fresh energy as possible. Fructose also adds just the right amount of sweetness and palatability. Studies have shown that we become highly sensitive to taste after extensive exercise. As a result, what tasted good at the beginning of exercise will, two-plus hours later, taste sickly sweet and become unpalatable. GU Electrolyte Brew, on the other hand, tastes perfect, which means you’ll continue to drink it and keep yourself hydrated.
Natural Flavors & Color: The Case for Natural Appeal
Studies show that taste, aroma, and color will most likely determine whether or not you keep drinking. Too much flavor or sweetness—often found in artificially flavored drinks—will cause you to stop hydrating after a while. That’s why we invest in all-natural flavor and color. We want you to keep gulping down GU Electrolyte Brew all day and enjoy keeping your fluid level topped off.
Citric Acid: A Tart and Powerful Energy Helper
Central to the production of energy is the citric acid cycle (Krebs Cycle), which taps citric acid and is responsible for the breakdown of amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids to produce ATP5 (the actual energy molecule that fuels your muscles). GU Electrolyte Brew uses it to speed along the processing of its carbohydrate blend. Citric acid also helps us attain a well-balanced taste flavor profile for GU Electrolyte Brew that keeps you wanting more.
