Mech Tips: How do I get stiff chain links - how to fix it?

by Biju K on December 28, 2023
The stiff links appear when a chain gets twisted in milli seconds time (often without us even realising it), as the chain moves across fast, rough and dangerous teeth of cassette and chain. It is very safe, as long as we are shifting the gears very precisely and on the right time and speed and RPM.
Just like car and motorbikes, bicycle gears are also designed to be used at various speeds for various gears.
In reality, the chain often gets very abruptly twists and turns when we move the front derailleur, attempting to shift gears, but often this can result in misfired imperfect shifting, which results in the chain getting pressed hard in the derailleur's cage.
These are rare cases, but unavoidable.
If you see a stiff link, the bet way to recover is to gently twist the chain left and right to give an opportunity to release it. A good mechanic will do this job better, but not a tough task.
In modern chains, there are no unknown reasons to get a chain stiff link - except if the chain was fixed by a local low-skilled mechanic with substandard tools and knowledge.
So drop by to Cycling Boutique Experience Center (service currently available only in Bengaluru, India), we can inspect the link to resolve it quickly.
