The classic folding mountain bike from Montague, the Paratrooper is tough, rugged, and ready for anything. Its patented folding design was developed under a grant from DARPA to allow airborne soldiers to drop out of airplanes and into combat.
The Paratrooper offers 24 speeds, front suspension, mechanical disc brakes, and the RackStand for hauling gear. Tackle any terrain, carry your gear, and fold it to stash in your trunk.

The Essentials
Great For
The Paratrooper is equipped with mechanical disc brakes. They offer quicker response, more stopping power, and better performance in wet weather than rim brakes.
Why a Folding Bike?
Folding bikes fit your lifestyle. Having the ability to fold your bike into a compact package in seconds allows you to store it easily in the home or office, and travel anywhere with your bike. It can fit in the car trunk, on the bus or train, and is perfect for your next trip.
Why Montague?
We set out to create the highest performance folding bikes in the world. All Montague bikes use full-size wheels, standard components, and a folding design that doesn't break any of the frame's tubing. Our focus has always been on perfecting ride quality, handling, and comfort.
An SR Suntour suspension fork allows the Paratrooper to glide over the obstacles,
roots, and rocks of off-road trails.
“Few bicycle companies need to measure the size of an aircraft door when designing a new model. But Montague Corp., based in Cambridge, Mass., did precisely that when the Pentagon said it needed a lightweight, foldable bike that special-operations forces could carry as they jumped out of airplanes into enemy territory.
US forces found the bikes ideal for moving quietly and without using scarce fuel. Word spread throughout the world's tightly knit military community.”
Time Magazine
“the Montague adds a new dimension to escaping into the wild. Its patented folding design was developed by the US military to allow soldiers to strap the bike to their chest before parachuting deep behind enemy lines.
It's incredibly simple to unfold - a single sturdy pin controls the hinge - and it has 27 gears, mechanical disc brakes, and full front shocks to help you make mincemeat of hostile territory. It also zips neatly into a bag which then fits into the boot, so weekend warriors don't have to worry about getting their car dirty on the way home.”
The Guardian
“Montague Tactical Military Mountain Bikes are full-size mountain bikes (MB) that provide an inexpensive alternative to walking; have enhanced off-body load bearing capabilities; a high level of maneuverability and can compact to a portable size in less than 30 seconds.
Currently, they are deployed in the US, Middle East, and Europe and are ideal for patrolling, security, rapid response, and jumping.”
Military Technology Magazine
The Paratrooper is equipped with RackStand, a traditional cargo rack, kickstand, work stand, and folded bike stand all in one.

Montague Corporation USA - History
Montague Corporation, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a company devoted to the design and production of bicycles that incorporates Folding Integrated Technology (F.I.T.), a revolutionary system deemed to be one of the next-generation trends in the bicycle industry.
1987
In 1987 David Montague, while in graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, formed the Montague Corporation - a company focused on designing and producing full-size, high-performance bicycles that fold — bicycles that sacrifice nothing in performance and still provide the folding benefit for space-saving convenience.
The first bicycle designed by Montague was dubbed the “BiFrame” for its patented Concentrus system, which unites the two parts of the frame with concentric seat tubes, one nested inside the other. Since then, Montague Corporation has never hit the brakes, winning numerous awards along the way, including Popular Mechanic's Design & Engineering Award.
1996
In 1996, the BMW/Montague Mountain bike was chosen as the Official Mountain Bike of the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. These bikes were featured in the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics and used by athletes for transportation to and from the Olympic venues. Montague bicycles are also distributed through high-end consumer catalogs such as Sharper Image, Neiman Marcus, Hammacher Schlemmer, and National Geographic.
1997
In 1997, Montague won a two-year grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which recognized the importance of the folding technology, to work with the United States Marines in developing the Tactical Electric No Signature (TENS) Mountain bike.
For this project Montague developed a new folding design, enabling the bike to fold faster for Paratrooper exit from military aircraft while also increasing its load-bearing capacity. This gave rise to the Paratrooper, Montague's non-electric Military Mountain Bike.
1999
In 1999 Montague launched a consumer line of bikes, the X-Series, based on the original Military Bike design. Due to the success of the X-Series and the publicity surrounding the DARPA development, there was an overwhelming demand for the original Military Bike. Montague decided to manufacture and launch the Paratrooper for professional and civilian use.
2002
In 2002 Montague partnered with General Motors to design and manufacture the HUMMER Tactical Mountain Bike, a version of Montague's popular military bike that folds to fit in the back of the Hummer p. This partnership demonstrates how Montague is spearheading a new and innovative approach.
2007
In 2007 Montague released a new line of rugged mountain bikes based on the X-Series platform. SwissBikes feature more aggressive rider positioning and focus on performance mountain biking. The SwissBike XO is the lightest, most technologically advanced bike in Montague's lineup. The SwissBikes are a great compliment to the already diverse Montague lineup.
2010
In 2010 Montague debuted a new frame design and with it, an entirely new line of full-size, 700c folding bikes. These bikes are designed for pavement-oriented riders. The new frame design features more elegant lines and a redesigned folding mechanism that allows for a faster, easier fold. With the addition of these models, Montague can offer a bike for every style of riding.
2011
In 2011 Montague released the Octagon steering system as an after-market component. Already a popular component on some of their road bikes and responding to consumer demand, Montague made Octagon available through local bike shops. Octagon allows the rider to adjust their handlebar height by up to four inches using the already familiar quick release system. More information is available at octagoncycles.com.
2013
In 2013 Montague debuts the Custom line of framesets, making their award-winning folding bike frame available individually for the first time. Riders can now build a Montague from the frame up with their components of choice, and Road, Single Speed, and Mountain frames are made available to accommodate custom builds for any riding style.
2015
In 2015 Montague launched the first official Park&Pedal program in the US in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Department of Transportation. The program encourages would-be car commuters to park outside the city and bike the rest of their way to their destination by providing free parking on commuting routes and near bike paths.
2016
In 2016 Montague debuts a completely re-designed folding bike line with the new DirectConnect folding system, the Eurobike Award-winning RackStand, and updated specs, paint, and decals. 27.5″ wheel folding mountain bikes are available for the first time as well as disc brake-equipped pavement models and a belt drive offering. The improved folding system removes the quick release from the top tube, makes folding easier, and provides stronger clamping.
2017
In 2017 Montague released the Rack stand as an after-market component. Already a popular component on some of their bikes and responding to consumer demand, Montague made Rack stand compatible with non-Montague Bikes. The Rack stand allows the rider to use the rack as a luggage carrier, mudguard, kickstand, and work stand. More information is available at rackstandcycles.com
